Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity. Though impulsive and immature, his idealism and passion make him an extremely likable character. A young man of about sixteen, Romeo is handsome, intelligent, and sensitive. Today, the title characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers.
